Programme Outline
This MSc/Postgraduate Diploma is designed for experienced healthcare professionals specialising in gastrointestinal disorders who are seeking to extend and expand their clinical practice and develop their professional role. This clinically focused programme aims to provide sound theoretical underpinnings and extend the depth of clinical knowledge on which to base advanced practice in gastrointestinal nursing. By building on skills, experience and knowledge, the programme will offer opportunites to lead the development and delivery of innovative and evidence based gastrointestinal nursing practice.
The MSc programme is usually offered on a three year (part-time) basis, and is also possible through alternative patterns of study. The one year postgraduate certificate and the two year postgraduate diploma are available for students who wish to undertake only the taught components. Attendance will be either one day per week or in study block format depending on which modules are taken. The programme will start each September.
Students will undertake core modules focusing on foundationns of gastrointestinal nursing practice, evidence based practice and healthcare research. In addition, students will then select three clinical course options totalling 45 credits. The courses which compromise these pathways are shown below. Students progressing to the MSc will undertake a research or service development project relevant to their own area of practice.
The MSc programme may be completed part time over a max of 6 years and min 2 years. Typically, students take:
- Certificate - 1 year (60 credits)
- Diploma - 2 years (120 credits)
- MSc - 3 years (180 credits)
Attendance will be either one day per week or in study block format. The programme will start each September.
Entry requirements for this programme:
- Good first degree (minimum 2nd class honours or equivalent)
- Working in a practice role
Possible entry dependant on supporting statement, reference to publications, funded research etc.
PG Certificate (1 year) - 60 credits:
- Foundations of GI Nursing (core)
- Evidence Based Decision Making in Healthcare (core)
- 1 x optional clinical course
PG Diploma (2 years) - 60 credits:
Above plus:
- Principle Methods for Healthcare Research (core)
- 2 x optional clinical courses OR
- 1 x optional clinical course plus Issues in the Conduct of Healthcare Research (core) OR Professional development and organisational change (core)
MSc (3 years) - 60 credits:
Above plus:
- Research or service development thesis (core)
