WOLFSON UNIT FOR ENDOSCOPY

We are one of the National Training Centres for colonoscopy and train both nurses and doctors to endoscope.The Wolfson Unit for Endoscopy at St Mark's Hospital has 5 procedure rooms, 4 of which are permanently in use and currently funding is being sought to utilise the remaining room.   

All endoscopists have their competency to endoscope assessed before they are allowed to endoscopy in the unit.  The nurses have a competency based training and assist the endoscopists during procedures and are responsible for patient care whilst they are having their procedure. 

We also have a team of clerical staff who are responsible for booking the patients and keeping the waiting lists up to date.  They also meet and greet the patients when they come for their procedures.  We have 3 technical staff who process the endoscopes and 2 porters who take patients to and from the wards as necessary and do any other portering jobs for both Endoscopy and St Mark's X-ray departments.

We are currently performing Gastroscopy, Colonoscopy, Flexible sigmoidoscopy, Bronchoscopy, E.R.C.P. and breath tests.  The Endoscopy Unit performs 10,500 cases per year and this is increasing at about 13% each year.
